The province of Alberta runs a comprehensive immigration program that facilitates immigration under the following streams:

Employer Driven Stream accepts applications from:

  • Skilled Workers – foreign workers in skilled occupations with offers of employment from an Alberta company;
  • International Graduates – international students whom have graduated from a Canadian publicly funded college or university (two year undergraduate program or one year graduate program) and are working in a skilled occupation for an Alberta employer on a valid work permit for the past six months;
  • Semi-skilled workers – Individuals in the food and beverage, hotel, trucking, and foodservices who have at least a high school diploma, speak English and have been working in Alberta for at least six months;

Strategic Recruitment Stream accepts applications from:

  • U.S. visa holders – individuals working in the U.S. on valid H-1B, H-1B1, H-1C, E-3, who have a minimum of one year of work experience in the U.S. and whose occupation is included in Alberta’s Occupations Under Pressure list may qualify provincial nomination. Applicants can qualify with or without an Alberta job offer, which makes this stream very attractive for foreigners living in the United States who are having trouble obtaining U.S. permanent residence; 
  • Engineers, designers and drafters with accumulated work experience in Alberta may qualify as long as they are presently living in Alberta; 
  • Compulsory Trade – individuals presently living and working in Alberta who possess an Alberta Qualification Certificate in a trade listed as a Compulsory Trade, may qualify under this program. 

Family Stream

Individuals with family relatives in Alberta (parent, child, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew of the Candidate (by birth or adoption), may apply for provincial nomination under the family stream provided that:

  • An Alberta Relative must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada and must be able to demonstrate he or she has been a citizen or permanent resident for at least two years.
  • An Alberta Relative must currently be a resident of Alberta, and must be able to demonstrate that he or she has been residing in Alberta for the past two years.
  • The Alberta Relative must be able to demonstrate employment, private pension or other regular source of income for the past 12 months OR a minimum of CAD $15,000 in unencumbered, transferable and available assets (jewellery, cars or other personal assets are not considered) over and above any income received from government transfer payments (e.g. Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan, etc.).
  • An Alberta Relative must be able to show a detailed Settlement Plan for the Candidate and the Candidate’s accompanying family members (if applicable)
  • An Alberta Relative must fulfill their commitment of support under the AINP Family Stream prior to supporting another family member. The commitment of support is defined as two years from the date that the Candidate became a permanent resident of Canada.
